Newly-planted hedges need formative pruning during the first two years in the ground, usually during the winter or early spring.
Once a hedge is established, regular maintenance trimming is required between spring and summer.
The general advice is to do this once a year for informal hedges and twice a year for formal hedges. However, some varieties of formal hedges may require up to three cuts a year.
By law, hedge cutting needs to take into account the possibility of nesting birds being present. If active bird nests are detected, then trimming must be delayed until after the nesting season (March to August).
Ideally, formal hedges need regular trimming so they do not exceed 2ft in width, even for fast growing varieties.
Both sides should be cut so they are tapered, meaning the base is slightly wider than the top. This allows light to reach the bottom of the hedge, promoting more even growth. This technique is referred to as cutting the hedge to a batter.
Trimming informal hedges is very similar to pruning other garden shrubs. The timings and techniques depend on the variety, such as an evergreen or flowering hedge.
For example, conifers and evergreens require regular trimming during summer. Cutting late in the year can produce bare patches and branches do not regrow from old wood.
