What are seasoned logs?

Seasoned logs is a term used to describe any firewood which has been left to dry on its own without using ovens.

Here at Branching Out, we aid the seasoning process by splitting large logs into smaller sizes straight after a tree is felled. The logs are then stored with the ends facing outwards so the wood dries thoroughly.

The process of splitting the wood into smaller logs maximises the amount of surface area exposed to the air, thus ensuring the wood is dried out or seasoned.

It is important for the logs to be kept completely dry by being stored under cover, whilst allowing the air to circulate through the wood. This is why log stores usually have a roof and open sides.

The time required to season firewood depends on the type of tree. For example, soft woods like pine dry quickly and can be seasoned within a year, while hard woods like oak take at least 18 months.

What are the benefits of using seasoned logs?

Whether you need logs for heating or cooking, firewood needs to be as dry as possible for an efficient burn.

Wood which still contains moisture will use up precious heat to evaporate the water content. This will produce more smoke and means less heat is generated.

This can cause serious problems in wood burners as the smoke will contain resin condensates, which are one of the most common causes of chimney fires.

For example, freshly cut ‘green’ wood can have a moisture content of more than 50%. We recommend that wood must have a moisture content of less than 20% to ensure an efficient burn.

As well as being difficult to ignite, burning freshly cut wood causes smoke and pollution, which is damaging to the environment. We recommend avoiding green wood at all costs.
