Thinking about adding a tree to your garden, but don’t know where and when to start? Our experts answer the big question: when is the best time to plant a tree?
Planting a tree at the wrong time of year risks hindering its growth and ultimate survival. For example, periods of extreme heat, cold or drought can cause stress to the tree, making it more vulnerable. Before you buy a tree, we recommend doing your research on the different varieties and how to spot signs of decay and disease.
What threats face newly planted trees?
During the winter, saplings can be exposed to frost damage that affects the leaves, stems and roots. While a light frost might only cause superficial damage, if the temperature drops too low it can seriously inhibit a tree’s ability to grow and thrive.
Adverse weather may not give the tree enough time to establish a strong root system. Shallow roots will mean the tree is less stable in strong winds and cannot access water and nutrients deep in the soil. Weaker trees will also lack the resilience to fight off insects and pathogens.
When asking when is the best time to plant a tree, avoid planting in summer as a lack of water can cause stress to a newly planted tree. Telltale signs include leaf wilting, foliage loss and even death.
Does each tree species have specific requirements?
When you walk around your local garden centre, you will find a wide variety of native and imported tree species. This means it is vital that you spend time researching the requirements for the tree species you prefer, so you fully understand its ideal planting season and conditions.
Take note of the preferred time of year, weather and soil moisture level before buying the tree. Check that you have an ideal location in your garden or outdoor space, such as a sunny patio or shady corner.
Young trees require weekly maintenance after planting, so draw up a plan to provide proper care, including a watering schedule and suitable protection from extreme weather. Invest time early on in a tree’s life and you will be rewarded with an established and healthy specimen for years to come.

When is the best time to plant a tree?
The general rule is to plant a new tree when they are dormant, as they are less likely to get damaged. In the UK climate, this means that the traditional tree planting season runs between November and March, although it can depend on the weather in any given year.
Ideally, planting in early autumn will give the tree time to become established before the onset of the more severe winter weather. Similarly, planting in late winter, early spring will allow the tree to settle before the warmer weather.
Look for trees that come with larger roots and a decent amount of soil, as this will protect them in the critical first few weeks and months. If you want several trees, it is imperative to stick to the planting season to avoid a high loss rate.
Do you have any tips for planting trees?
Prepare your site before planting by marking the location, clearing any weeds and cutting the grass. The aim is to reduce the competition for water by removing nearby plants. Ensure trees are planted two metres away from your house, neighbouring properties and boundaries. Also try to avoid services, such as pipes and broadband cables.
When choosing your species, check the size of the tree when fully grown to avoid roots and branches spreading into next door, or obstructing the light.
